One of the busiest railway stations on the Western Line. It is one of the main terminating and originating stop for a lot of locals on the western line. It serves as a major local changing point for people staying beyond Virar (Vaitarana to Dahanu). It's almost at the centre of Churchgate & Dahanu Road. The distance from Virar to Churchgate is 60 kms & from Virar to Dahanu Road is 64 kms. Virar station consists of 8 platforms which performs the function as follows: Platform No 1, 2 & 3 are the originating & terminating platform for locals running between Churchgate & Virar. Platform No 4 serves as down main line & Platform No 5 serves as up main line. Platform No 6 is a loop line platform specially used by the shuttles originating from Virar. Also Platform No 4, 5 & 6 are used for originating & terminating locals for sometimes throughout the whole. Platform No 3A & 4A are the originating & terminating platform for locals running between Dahanu Road & Virar. Currently Virar station is undergoing a massive change and this will make Virar one of the best station with 4 new platforms addition, making Virar station a station with almost 12 platforms.

It serves as the primary gateway for anyone traveling towards Dahanu Road; almost all Dahanu-bound locals either start or terminate here, making it a critical transit point. The station has seen massive upgrades recently with the widening of Platforms 3A and 4A to accommodate 15-coach trains, which has slightly helped with the insane peak-hour rush. While the introduction of more AC locals is a plus for comfort, it has made the regular non-AC trains even more crowded. The new Platform 5A and the ongoing work for the high-speed rail and quadrupling project show that the station is evolving. Virar was the northernmost station on the first regular suburban train service of the erstwhile BB&CI railway that commenced on 12 April 1867. The station was remodeled in 1913. It is a terminating station for Virar bound local trains. It is very crowded especially during peak hours.
