Powai Lake, an artificial reservoir situated in the northern suburb of Powai, Mumbai, Maharashtra, stands as a significant urban waterbody amid the city’s bustling landscape. Constructed in 1891 by the British colonial administration, the lake was created by damming a tributary of the Mithi River between two hillocks to augment the drinking water supply for Bombay (now Mumbai). At the time of its inception, it spanned approximately 2.1 square kilometers (520 acres) with depths ranging from 3 meters at the periphery to 12 meters at its deepest point, and a catchment area of about 6.61 square kilometers. Historically, Powai Lake served as a vital supplementary source of potable water and supported recreational activities such as angling and boating. Surrounded by lush greenery, the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), and upscale developments like Hiranandani Gardens, it offers scenic views and a serene escape from urban chaos. The lake once harbored rich biodiversity, including diverse freshwater fish species, migratory and resident birds, marsh crocodiles, and native flora such as balsam bushes and aquatic plants. Over time, rapid urbanization, untreated sewage inflow, garbage dumping, and invasive species like water hyacinth have led to eutrophication and degradation, rendering the water unfit for drinking. It is now primarily used for non-potable purposes, including gardening, industrial supply, and fishing. Ongoing revival efforts by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), environmental organizations, and community initiatives focus on desilting, weed removal, sewage diversion, and the establishment of treatment plants to restore its ecological health and recreational value. Despite challenges, Powai Lake remains a cherished natural asset, symbolizing the balance between urban development and environmental conservation in Mumbai.

The lake is beautiful but the pavement and footpath around the lake is not great. The footpath is either dirty or broken across most places. Plus some parts are not connected by the pathway, needing the person to go around construction on the road. It's a pleasant visit to go early mornings and not later in the day.
