Vanakkam Vihar, located right opposite the iconic Royal...
Vanakkam Vihar, located right opposite the iconic Royal Opera House in Girgaon, is a reliable, bustling spot for anyone craving solid, comforting South Indian comfort food in South Mumbai. Whether you are wrapping up a beach stroll at nearby Girgaon Chowpatty or stepping out after a show at the Opera House, this multi-level pure-vegetarian restaurant offers a welcoming and clean environment. Here is a comprehensive look at what to expect: The Vibe & Ambiance The restaurant balances traditional charm with a modern, spacious casual-dining setup. The ground floor features comfortable high and low seating, while the upper level ("Firangi") branches out into multi-cuisine options. The space is well-lit, fully air-conditioned, and remarkably clean, making it highly family-friendly. The staff adds a touch of authenticity by dressing in traditional South Indian attire. What to Order While the massive menu extends to North Indian dishes and street-side snacks, the absolute highlight here remains their coastal and southern delicacies. The Dosas: Their Kara Masala Dosa and Chettinad Dosa are beautifully crisp, served with generous portions of fresh coconut chutney, a tangy tomato-garlic chutney, and piping hot sambar. If you are looking for something lighter, the Neer Dosa and fluffy Appams paired with a rich veggie stew or Malabari curry are top-tier. The Idli Platters: Beyond standard idlis, their Podi Idli (tossed in a vibrant, spiced gun powder and ghee) and the signature Thalaiva Idli are highly recommended. Filter Coffee: No meal here is complete without their authentic Filter Coffee. It is served strong, perfectly frothy, and features that robust, traditional chicory-coffee blend. Jain Options: For those with dietary restrictions, the restaurant stands out for offering a robust, dedicated selection of highly flavorful Jain South Indian variants.

1. Hygiene issue: The glass we were served water in, had lipstick stain and stain from previous use. Washroom needs more cleanliness. 2. Food: tamarind rice was not upto the mark. Dosa (rajni something name) was above average. Rasam was 8/10. They do not have tomato chutney either. 3. Ambience: was good. The choice of music played enhanced it.

Located on the main street, the restaurant is easy to find but parking can be a challenge. The seating is well designed and comfortable, though it can get a bit noisy at times due to the traffic outside. Itโs a nice place if you want to try South Indian food with a fusion touch, while still having authentic options available. The idli was good, but the burnt garlic dosa absolutely won my heart. The prices are slightly on the higher side for South Indian cuisine, possibly because of the prime location. The taste definitely justifies a visit, but I would rate it one star less purely because of the pricing.
